I understand that when the founders created the country, their idea was to do away with the aristocracy, but they were so entrenched in it themselves that it seems to me what they actually did was everyone access to aristocratic rights and their trappings, rather than getting rid of them. Both are equally weird and not particularly egalitarian, but also inescapable in a democracy that demands of its citizens that they take on the running of their own government and therefore one another. My ambivalence stems from the fact that I the reason behind all of these traditions and I think that there are very good arguments for each of them. The problem is that each also runs serious risks if they are not practiced with the utmost care and thought. I think there's a right way and a wrong way to engage in martial pursuits, to practice philanthropy, to learn, to lead or to follow .but one cannot force the right way on others and still consider things to be free. So what to do? I think democracy entails giving people dangerous things and then fervently crossing our fingers that we don't all fuck it up too badly. For my own person, I find guns nice for hunting but cowardly for self-protection. I think if a person comes to the point where they need a gun for self-protection, they most likely failed somewhere at an earlier stage when they could have prevented needing it in the first place. Yes, there are a handful of cases where the person did everything right and life still crapped on them, but much of the time some form of diplomacy, forethought, or prevention failed to happen beforehand. Also, I should add that I think beating someone's ass with bare hands is much more than just shooting them, which is lazy and simple and therefore not in keeping with the tradition that guns come from and in which we are asked to wield them.
